The Second World War ended in 1945. However world peace was far from being achieved. The two Allied powers USA and Soviet Union became permanent foes. Their struggle for supremacy came to be known as Cold War. The Cold War was in a sense worse than World War because this was a process in which the two Superpowers tried to win each other with one upmanship.
The situation became so grave during the 1962 Cuba Missle Crisis that a nuclear war seemed eminent. However this did not happen.During the 1970s the Cold War got transformed to a different level of war tactics. The undercurrent of supremacy got to be known as the 'detente'- the stage in which the two countires became rivals in a restrained manner.
During the 1990s the Cold War ended with Soviet President Gorbachev's twin policies of 'glasnost' and 'perestroika' . The erstwhile Soviet Union fell like a pack of cards.
There are many debates about the post Cold War world order. The major two theories says that the world becmae unipolar with American hegemony and other said that the world became multipolar in which lower powers like India and China rose to power. However the post Cold War era saw a economic crisis in the Eastern European Communist countires where it became a grave issue. After Post Cold War the problem of 'terrorism ' became a major issue of concern.
September 2001 saw an event that completely changed the world politics. An American aircraft was hijacked by the terrorist group Al-Queda and pounced on the American twin tower in NewYork. During minutes the symbol of American supremacy Pentagon and World Trade Center broke killing about five thousand people. The American hegemony got a fine scare and they declared a war against terrorism in Afganistan and Iraq. The American troops schorhced Iraq and Afganistan killing thousands of innocent civilians.
The allegation of so called WMD( Weapons of Mass Destruction) was found to be hoax and during the mid 2000s the Iraqi President Saddam Hussein was brutally killed. Though America remains one of the most well sought out democratic countires of the world however the world politics shows that American hegemony is always tested by the democratic norms in which there has been gross violation of human rights.
However in a major political unheal a most ordianary man Barrak Hussein Obama became the symbol of the triumph of the underdog as he became the first black Presidnet of USA. Obama has once agian gave the world a reason to be hopeful about world peace. However it will require time and understanding when America will earn the respect of World Pacifist Missions. Till then it can be said that the Post Cold War World Order is unipolar as well as multipolar.
